You want to keep Alberta in Canada? As a separatist, I would like to know one thing.
Why?
What is the reason for your undeserved devotion to Canada?
I have yet to see a cogent reason for us to stay. (Unless you count gold-medal winning hockey teams.)
How does Alberta benefit from being a province in Canada?
Can anyone answer without the use of tired patriotic platitudes, doomsday threats, or attempts to bully, guilt or shame us into compliance?
Hi Keith,
Thank you for reaching out. Why do we want to stay in Canada? That is a great question. I can't answer for everyone, but here is my answer: Canada started as an idea. A large land mass that was sparsely populated. One that the first nations roamed leaving very little trace or impact on the land. The fishers arrived to the Grand Banks and took fish back to Europe. Then the first explorers arrived finding a vast wilderness with wild animals a small human footprint and they declared the land France's and the the English came. Beaver hats were very popular and the furtrade was born. Then people came to make a life for themselves. Moving west. Some First Nations signed treaties that bind us together even today. People came to settle here break land, farm, build the railway, provide services. They came from Europe, US, Asia, Africa, and South America. We have celebrated and adopted their foods, culture, music etc from all over the world. We are a mosaic! It is amazing to have a country where all cultures can live together in peace. We may not be perfect. Each province is like a sibling in the family. We don't always get along but we a have something to bring to the table. Alberta compares itself to Quebec who set it's position within confederation at the very beginning. It is using Quebec as a blueprint to develop more autonomy. Setting up foreign offices, looking at APP, private police force, etc. As Canadians we are used to doing hard things, relying on our neighbour's, disagreeing about things. But we have always talked to each other. Tried to support those who need it. Alberta got the TMX pipeline. Maritimers came to Alberta to help build the oil sands. Alberta put out the Alberta is Calling campaign and Ontarians and BCers heard the call and came. We have work to do... reconciliation is an ongoing process, but when we work together Canada is an amazing country. That's why I am Canadian.
