Send Peter Hoekstra packing.
As a proud Canadian, I am deeply troubled by the continued presence of Pete Hoekstra as the US ambassador to our great country. This is more than just a diplomatic position—it’s a role that requires respect, tact, and an understanding of our shared history and values. Unfortunately, Ambassador Hoekstra has demonstrated none of these qualities.
Remove Pete Hoekstra as US ambassador to Canada.

Write the Federal Health Minister re: Bill 11
Alberta has passed Bill 11: The Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (No. 2), legislation that allows doctors to charge unlimited fees at for-profit clinics for medically necessary procedures while also working in the public system.
This American-style approach opens our health care to private insurance corporations, creating preferential access for the wealthy few who can pay while increasing wait times for everyone else. If Alberta’s law stands, other provinces may follow, undermining our entire health care system nationwide.
We’re asking Canadians across the country to contact Health Minister Marjorie Michel and their MP, urging them to enforce the Canada Health Act, which guarantees medically necessary care based on need, not ability to pay.

The Jay Treaty
The colonial border between the US and Canada dissects Indigenous territories in ways that sever the lifelines between First Nations families, communities, languages, and ceremonies.
Every year, thousands of U.S.-born First Nations people who are Indigenous to Canada are denied the ability to live and work in Canada because the government refuses to recognize their ancestral rights to do so. With ICE now arresting First Nations and Indigenous people in the U.S. and looking at deporting them, this treaty will give them safe haven in Canada with their communities.

One of the most comprehensive articles written on Alberta’s healthcare pressures by @BillKaufmannjrn
Worth the read. The already strained healthcare system is hard-pressed to meet growing population demands
ER overcrowding isn’t just an emergency department problem; it’s a whole-system capacity and flow problem.
Solutions:
1. Expand home and community care so seniors can remain at home instead of occupying hospital beds.
2. Increase long-term care capacity to reduce pressure on acute care hospitals.
3. Recruit and train more healthcare workers, including expanding medical school seats, nursing programs, and credentialing internationally trained professionals.
4. Strengthen team-based primary care networks so family doctors can care for larger patient panels with support from other providers and better manage chronic disease to prevent hospitalizations.
5. Use technology (e.g., AI-assisted triage) to improve access and efficiency in the system.
6. Add acute-care beds to meet growing demand. We need to get to 2.4 beds/1000, and for 5 million people, that means 12,000 hospital beds. Today we have 8,800, so that is another 3200 beds to meet today’s needs to catch up with a lot of deferred care.
7. Develop long-term budgeting, workforce, and infrastructure planning to prepare for population growth, an aging population, and technological advancements.

It has not worked well in other countries, but Marlaina/Danielle wants to break public health care, so that’s where Alberta is heading. What about the Procurement Scandal? Do you think it’s appropriate for the government to give sole source contracts to certain organizations - like ROSC for mental health or MHCare for procurement? Acute Care Alberta - the hospitals are at Code Red. No one in government is willing to call the emergency. They are talking about adding doctors to triage in Emergency Waiting Rooms - that was 4 weeks ago, and we are still waiting. The UCP has put EMS on life support itself. The statistics are astounding. 33,000 overtime hours monthly. Ambulances are being downgraded. 40 EMS shifts are unstaffed daily. Ambulances were sent from different areas to cover shortages, leaving those areas in need. If you call an ambulance, you may not get one for hours. EMS Paramedics are not getting the support they need to do their jobs, to remain healthy and functioning for their families and communities. When they need support, the government is making sure it’s not there. As Albertans, we can do better. They are investing $7.7 billion in staffing doctors. They have also created a new corporation HSS to oversee the four different silos, so another layer of management that will have to be paid for. Hard to believe that AHS did the job of all five areas and did it well. Demand better from Danielle Smith’s government. There are some actions to ask the Federal government to stop Bill 11.
Education (building charter and providing funding to support building, funding charter and private schools while public schools are struggling, firing Support staff during COVID lockdowns and not hiring them all back, not funding complex classrooms, the funding formula, not negotiating with teachers). News Flash - Webber Academy Calgary received over $5 million last year, and they donated $3.8 million to West Aspen Holdings. Since 2018, they have donated $73 million to this entity. Webber Academy’s $70m Slush Fund - by the ATA rank and file, Nicolaides wants to build bridges with Alberta teachers - he is fighting the school boards about banned books, expecting testing of K-3 students, and is setting up studies to improve education without actually putting money into fixing it. The government saved $143 million from striking teachers; they are turning that around to hire 436 Complexity teams to go into schools. These teams will consist of one teacher and two educational assistances so 436 + 872 = 1308 educators. Some rural school districts are getting one team for up to 20+ schools because they are only available for K - 6 classrooms. They will be lucky if they get one day a month with the complexity team in place. This is a band-aid, made to make the government look good. It is not a plan, it is not a long-term solution. Look deeper than the headlines and talk to educators; they will let you know this is too little too late. Budget increasing education spending to $10.8 billion. The government just announced planning and building 16 new schools in rural Alberta.
Energy: Oil and Gas (not capping abandoned wells, Mature Asset Strategy, Fracking, Pipelines. Taxpayers cover Oil and Gas companies’ taxes to municipalities and rent to farmers for their land with abandoned wells. Demanding pipelines. This week, they announced $28 million for 7 projects, one of which will implement their MAS strategy to try, and get more oil/gas out of wells in the Calgary area. CNRL postpones Jackpine expansion of the oilsands.

Environment - Coal mining in the Rockies, Water conservation, developing the Little Smoky area, hunting, Oil and Gas well shutdowns, pipelines, others? Corb Lund has filed a Citizen Initiative to stop coal mining in the Rockies. The Alberta Government just changed the Citizen Initiative Act to make it harder for people to file. The cost has gone up from $500 to $25,000. It came into force after the Separatists filed their Separation Citizen Initiative. Northback continues to advertise steel-making coal, not using water from streams, but it will still use water. The coal dust will deposit in waterways, contaminating them with selenium. Corb Lund’s petition is active. He has canvassers out collecting signatures across Alberta. They need canvassers to sign up!
AISH/ADAP - Clawing back $200 from the federal government’s Canadian Disability Benefit for people on AISH and ADAP. Charging those in subsidized housing more - $200/month. or that they are moving all AISH recipients to ADAP, which will lower their monthly payment, and allow them to claw back more money if they are working. Currently, AISH recipients can earn over $1000 without money being deducted from their AISH payment. If they go on ADAP, they can only make $350 more. Here is a link to the information: Understanding the proposed changes to AISH, the new Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP), This is still slated to take place; there is no news about the infrastructure to support the ADAP program.
Wildlife - the bills that the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife has introduced that allow using dogs to hunt cougars and bears, trapping of endangered animals, and nine trips out of Canada to promote/sell his Ministerial licenses to come hunt in Alberta, when his family owns an outfitting/hunting company, “Red Willow Outfitters.” They are now being sued by wildlife organizations. It is the time of year that Loewen is making the tours of all the wildlife events outside of Alberta (in other countries) to auction/sell off his Ministerial hunting licenses. They have made it legal to hunt fenced in deer and elk populations (canned hunting).

Build Community: Albertans need to work together to educate and build community. Finding your people is important. We are starting to host Zoom meetings and setting up to connect people in communities across Alberta.
Town halls, such as the Accidental Advocate and Friends of Medicare, are hosting Dr. Paul Parks. The Separatists and the Far right, like TBA (Take Back Alberta), are well-organized and have lots of money. Forever Canadian is getting ready to launch citizen actions. We need to counter that with information and community. Be a part of the change. See our ABR Resistor Update.
Join our Facebook page or a local group that shares events, information, and ideas on how to spread the word.
If you haven’t joined our webpage yet, please do. We are sending out newsletters specifically for different areas of Alberta to get support for recalls. There are many jobs you can do. If you join our volunteer list, I will invite you to our “Recall Connect” group so you can connect directly with recalls that are looking for assistance.
Knowledge:
Talk to your friends and share what you know. Watching the Socials, we see more outrage and anger about what is happening to Health Care, Education, Social Services, and the Environment in this province. These areas affect everyone! It’s time to speak up.
(They only win if we give up!)
Wins this week -
We are continuing to work with other groups to show up at peaceful demonstrations around the province. For details, see our ABR Resistor Update.
AB Resistance is a small group of volunteers that pays for expenses solely through donations. Hosting town halls, printing, paying for websites, and social media software all cost money. If you would like to donate to our cause, please transfer to abrdonate@gmail.com. We are a third-party advertiser, which means we report to Alberta Elections. When you donate, please include your name, address, and postal code in the message. The question is “What province do we live in? = Alberta, even if you don’t live here. It makes it easier for our CFO to accept your money. Thanks to everyone who has already donated. You can now sign up for our Substack. We will be publishing extra articles that uncover what the government is doing. By joining, you help us to fund townhalls, print materials, and get the word out to the public.
ABResistance has a “Speaker Series” - They are coming! For the Speaker Series lineup, Ali has: Chris from Friends of Medicare to talk about healthcare, and Claire Kratz to talk about the environment.
Dr. Jared Wesley, Nigel Banks, and Corb Lund with Laura Lang. We are not sure of the exact dates, so stay posted.
There are more being posted as we get them ready, so keep checking our YouTube channel, and we will post them in the newsletter as well (See the video section)
