Procurement Scandal A Recap.
Aug 25, 2025
Danielle Smith's former Chief of Staff, Marshall Smith, personally oversaw the hiring of two family members of private health care company MHCare CEO Sam Mraiche. Two nephews of Sam Mraiche were awarded top government policy advisor roles, while multiple contract scandals with MHCare were unfolding.
What was particularly intriguing about the hiring of these two individuals into prestigious policy advisor roles was that both nephews’ employment qualifications showed no experience or training that would have pre-qualified them for the roles in the portfolios they were hired into.
New documents obtained through the Access to Information Program clearly identify Marshall Smith as the authorizing signature for both of these hires.
It's worth remembering that these aren't the only appointments that have raised eyebrows. As The Breakdown also reported in October of 2024, Danielle Smith appointed Sam Mraiche's longtime business associate, Sam Jaber, to the board of Invest Alberta.
Mr. Jabar gifted Skybox playoff tickets in May of 2024 in Vancouver to Danielle Smith. They were then used by her, Marshall Smith, and others, with Sam Mraiche in attendance as well. This was 6 months after his appointment to this elite role. It was also after Marshall Smith, as Danielle’s Chief of Staff, took over approving MLAs and staff accepting gifts over $200, and now it has morphed into accepting gifts of any value with no oversight. As reported by The Globe and Mail in July of 2024. (This was just after one of Sam Mraiche’s nephews was hired by Marshall Smith as a policy advisor.)
In addition, The Globe and Mail revealed earlier this year that Danielle Smith's Chief of Staff was also living in a mansion valued at an estimated $1.6 million, owned by Sam Mraiche's sister, Fatima, which she purchased in August of 2023. (the same date that one of the nephews was hired as a policy advisor)
Given the public acknowledgement of a family relationship between Mraiche and Justice Minister Mickey Amery and the acknowledged friendship between the two, this further raises questions of potential conflicts of interest in the ongoing scandal.

ABR Spotlight - At the bottom of the newsletter is our information on who is running for Edmonton’s Public School Board as of August 25, 2025. We also have a link for the Lethbridge elections. UCP Travels - Two Ministers are out of country this week.
Nathan Neudorf, the Minister of Affordability and Utilities, is off to London, UK, to attend a Nuclear Summit with 2 staffers. 4 days at the end are personal - 7 days on Alberta's business, 3 of those the Nuclear summit Sept. 3-5 (details below). The UCP will have been out of Canada for 225 days on your dime.
https://www.wna-symposium.org/
(I am finding my life is more unaffordable under this government. What about you?)
You have an opportunity to be heard re: the Nuclear Option here: https://www.alberta.ca/nuclear-energy-engagement
Andrew Boitchenko, the Minister of Sports and Tourism, is off to Japan and South Korea for an 8-day trip - leaving August 28 and returning September 6. This will be 52 trips and 234 days that UCP MLAs have made out of the country. They sit for 13 out of 52 weeks in the legislature. 13 weeks x 4 days (because they have Fridays off) = 52 days they are working for you at the legislature! Not enough money for health care, education, AISH, ADAP, children, and Seniors. Limited affordable housing for the homeless. No safe consumption sites and to get into a rehab program (Designed and run by a BC company), you need to hire a personal support person who takes a short course to become certified... Alberta, are you going to keep accepting this behavior from a government that is in the pocket of Oil and Gas and people who want to privatize our services?
The legislature has been out since May 16, 2025. The last day of sitting was May 14, 2025, with a day to swear in new Ministers and to sign bills. It will be sitting again on October 27, 2025 - That’s 65 days/40 working days from August 22, 2025 (Teachers are back at school this week without a contract and extra expectations - filling out paperwork to ensure any person over 12 is born female to participate in sports, opting in forms for any talk about sexual education as mandated by the curriculum set out by the UCP and cataloguing books in their classroom libraries by Oct. 1st to ensure none meet the Ministerial order for banning.)
The UCP Caucus is down 2 members and is now at 46. There are 38 NDP MLAs and 2 Independents.

Immigration
Migration to Alberta (IMMIGRATION)
Migrants are driving a population growth rate in Canada.
Smith is targeting immigrants to other countries. This creates animosity towards a group and takes the heat off of her. Keep the heat on the government.
When watching the Alberta Next Panel Townhalls and the blame being put on immigrants for Alberta’s difficulty in paying for health care, education, and social programs… I had to go back and find the information. Surprisingly, over 80% of Albertans in 2021 identified as European/South American and First Nations/Metis.
Alberta Demographics
I did the math on Alberta’s population to show you how we break down by ethnicity, so we can see who makes up Alberta
The 2021 census data is:
People’s ancestors - where their families originated from:
European/South America - 78.9%
First Nations/Metis - 5.6%
Asia - 8.2%
Africa/Jamaica - 2.51%
Middle East - 1.3%
Demographics of Alberta - Wikipedia
White European Nations make up the majority of Alberta’s voters.
Fun Fact: In July 1951, Alberta's population was 943,000.
When Danielle became Premier in May 2022, we were at 4,431,53,1, and we are now at 4,980,659 - we have grown by 550,000 Albertans, putting minimal or no infrastructure in place for half a million new people. Who’s the problem here?
If you want to get involved - Resistors, here you go:
This is one way you can help us spread the message as we prepare for recalls. We can’t do it without you. We Are The Resistance!
A call to action for Creative and Engaged AB Resistance Volunteers.
Our marketing strategy volunteer, Ashley, has created a detailed marketing volunteer information presentation for Alberta Resistance (ABR), a group of engaged Albertans aiming to drive positive change in the province. The presentation outlines the organization's mission, which includes promoting decency in politics, fostering caring communities, and encouraging optimism. There's an emphasis on the importance of nonpartisan communication and the strategic use of social media to counter misinformation and engage various levels of voters. AB Resistance plans to leverage the recall legislation to empower Albertans and create a more inclusive and transparent political environment. ABR needs volunteers, like you, to contribute content across different media formats and highlight the phased approach to building momentum for recall campaigns. The ultimate goal is to transform uninformed citizens into active participants in democracy, celebrating the efforts of committed volunteers who are building a better Alberta.
Reach out via message here or with AB Resistance to see the whole presentation and to get involved!

A Message from ABR (Alberta Resistance)
Recalls: We are moving closer to a Recall for Change in Calgary Bow and Calgary North West. We would love to hear from you if you are interested in standing up a Recall in your riding. Contact us at: abresistance2027@gmail.com (Sherwood Park/Strathcona postponed. But we have one booked for Lethbridge on Sept. 15th and one for Calgary on Sept. 23rd - check out the Resistor for details)
Build Community: Albertans need to work together to educate and build community.
Town halls will be starting up; watch for one in your area. The Separatists and the Far right, like TBA (Take Back Alberta), are well-organized and have lots of money. (The Breakdown on X is sharing an audio with Dennis Modry’s voice from the APP saying that the US will give the separatists a $500 million loan to separate from Canada - we are not going to become the 51st state right away https://x.com/TheBreakdownAB/status/1948532405431861349. We need to counter that with information and community. Be a part of the change. See our ABR Resistor Update
There are several opportunities to attend rallies and protests this week.
Join our Facebook page or a group in your area that shares events, information, and ideas on how to spread the word.

Knowledge:
Talk to your friends and share what you know. Watching the Socials, we see more outrage and anger about what is happening to Health Care, Education, Social Services, and the Environment in this province. These areas affect everyone! It’s time to speak up.
Keeping this one here: The Province has launched another - you guessed it - PANEL Alberta Next Panel. They have scheduled a series of town halls, and you can sign up for them 2 weeks before the event. There is also a survey attached that has you watch a video and then answer 2 - 4 questions. None of the answers allow for any negative feedback, but if you answer the questions, there is an opportunity for you to put in your opinions.
The NDP has its Better Together Campaign going as well. You can check it out here: Better Together: Alberta NDP Caucus
(They only win if we give up!)
Wins this week -
We are working with other groups to show up at peaceful demonstrations around the province. For details, see our ABR Resistor Update.
AB Resistance is a small group of volunteers that pays for expenses solely through donations. Hosting town halls, printing, paying for websites, and social media software all cost money. If you would like to donate to our cause, please etransfer to abrdonate@gmail.com. We are a third-party advertiser, which means we report to Alberta Elections. When you donate, please include your name, address, and postal code in the message. The question is “What province do we live in? = Alberta, even if you don’t live here. It makes it easier for our CFO to accept your money. Thanks to everyone who has already donated. You can now sign up for our Substack. We will be publishing extra articles that uncover what the government is doing. By joining, you help us to fund townhalls, print materials, and get the word out to the public.
ABResistance has a “Speaker Series” - check it out on our webpage SPEAKER SERIES - AB Resistance. We are taking the month of July off (unless something emergent comes up) and will be back in August with some new topics. We are also posting the videos on Substack, and you can access them here on YouTube: @abresistance.ca (some nice ab work out videos may show up as well). Some upcoming guests are Dr. Carla Peck on education, and Thomas Lukazuk, former MLA and Deputy Premier, on the Canadian Forever campaign.

Edmonton School Board Trustee Election Candidates. (Formerly known as the Edmonton Public School Board and still known by the initials EPSB. I want to say I found it delicious to hear Premier Smith refer to them as Edmonton Public when accusing them of vicious compliance to the Ministerial Order on Literature in schools)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton_Public_Schools
Edmonton Public Schools (legally Edmonton School Division) is the largest public school division in Edmonton, the second largest in Alberta, and the sixth largest in Canada. The division offers a variety of alternative and special needs programs, and many are offered in multiple locations to improve accessibility for students. As a public school division, Edmonton Public Schools accepts all students who meet the age and residency requirements set out in provincial legislation.
Size
Edmonton Public Schools operates 214 schools. There are a total of 125 elementary schools, 38 elementary/junior high schools, 5 elementary/junior/senior high schools, 26 junior high schools, 4 junior/senior high schools, 16 senior high schools, and 7 other educational services offered. Approximately 115,000 students attend Edmonton Public Schools, and there are over 10,500 full-time staff equivalencies. The proposed operating budget is $1.296 billion for the 2023–2024 fiscal year ($10,660/student).
