If you have been following our newsletter, you know that former AHS CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos was fired from AHS for investigating government contracts with private surgical groups and the procurement of acetaminophen (Turkish Tylenol) from overseas, as well as PPE. To find out the truth, this case needs to be brought to court. We want the truth! Albertans deserve the truth. She needs money to fight back. Check out this video. It's a righteous cause you would be supporting. Let's do it! We Are Stronger Together! ❤️
Update May 23: Athana has been sued for $12 million by former Smith Chief of Staff, Marshall Smith, for alleged defamation of character.
Update May 29: Athana was in court because the Province wanted her to reveal what evidence she had shared with the RCMP and with the Auditor General. The AG had a special intervenor's status to stop the Government lawyers from getting that information before the case goes to court.
Update June 13: Athana has asked for the courts to settle her wrongful dismissal suit quickly. The Breakdown is releasing some of the emails that outline the amount of money that the UCP paid in the procurement scandal, over $1 billion to MH Care and the Private Surgery Groups. It all points to Jitendre Prasad as the procurement officer for AHS. (See last week’s newsletter for the screen grabs)
Update June 24: The court has blocked the Auditor General from receiving two emails from Athana. He has asked for extra money and support to continue the investigation, including legal advice. Auditor general granted $1M more for private surgical contracts probe | CBC News
Here is a CHAT GPT dive into the procurement scandal and what some repercussions might be.
Robots predict UCP Investigation, and eventual Dismissal of charges — OWL NEWS
The longer the UCP is in charge, the more damage can be done, not just healthcare, but all levels of education, social assistance, renewable energy, infrastructure, affordability - everything!!!!
The UCP knew what was going on, and they tried to cover it up! $1 billion that could have gone to improving health care. This does not include the 10 private nursing agencies that are receiving premium dollars to supply nurses to Alberta Health, while trained nurses in Alberta are looking for work and can’t get hired by Alberta Health.
Concerned about the Alberta Government’s restriction of access to information? Here is a great summary of what it is all about.

ABR Spotlight
So this showed up on X/Twitter this week regarding Sam Mraiche, but other people involved in the Procurement Scandal were mentioned as well, so we looked into some of the points raised. There are so many articles, we just picked one for each topic as we looked down the rabbit hole.

Athana Information (Yes, she was mentioned)
November 22, 2011
$160,000 communication contract was given to Stewart Muir (Athana’s husband) without the proper channels. It does not point fingers at Athana doing the hiring…
(Now, some people would equate this with what happened in Alberta with the procurement scandals, we would argue this would make Athana even more aware and want to ensure everything was done by the books, which investigating the contracts would appear to be the prudent thing to do.)

Alberta government axes AHS board — again — in latest health reform move | CBC News. They refused to fire Athana, so Deputy Health Minister Andre Tremblay fired Athana and then the board. He has taken over as CEO. LeGrange tried to have him in both positions, but that didn’t work out, so she appointed the deputy minister of Mental Health and Addictions as deputy health minister - he lasted about 3 months. Currently, there are two deputy ministers of Health fulfilling that role - one is an IT tech expert, because they also let go of the Chief Information Officer. They are covering something up here.

Video of The Week
As we travel this summer, it is important to understand the different types of Social Styles. We can be much more effective in getting our message across if we understand where people are coming from.
Throw Back - None this week.
A Message from ABR (Alberta Resistance)
Recalls: are moving closer to a Recall for Change in Calgary Bow and Calgary North West.
Build Community: Albertans need to work together to educate and build community.
Townhalls will be starting up; watch for one in your area. The Separatists and the Far right, like TBA (Take Back Alberta), are well-organized and have lots of money. We need to counter that with information and community. Be a part of the change. Alberta Next Panel Town Halls. You can sign up for the ones you would like to attend two weeks in advance. https://www.alberta.ca/alberta-next-panel-engagement (cut and paste the link). So, the first town hall in Red Deer on July 14th - we have checked out the website, and there is no link to sign up. Hopefully, it’s just a glitch because of Canada Day.
Knowledge: A couple of interesting links we found this week:
Talk to your friends and share what you know. Watching the Socials, we see more outrage and anger about what is happening to Health Care, Education, Social Services, and the Environment in this province. These areas affect everyone of us! It’s time to speak up.
The Province has launched another - you guessed it - PANEL Alberta Next Panel. They have scheduled a series of town halls, and you can sign up for them 2 weeks before the event. There is also a survey attached that has you watch a video and then answer 2 - 4 questions. None of the answers allow for any negative feedback, but if you answer the questions, there is an opportunity for you to put in your opinions.
We know these have passed, but we can still share our opinions on them. Bills 53, 54, 55 Status:
Passed Royal Assent on May 15, 2025. outside of the House sitting
Comes into Force: on proclamation with exceptions SA 2025 cC-21.5
Link to a letter you can forward/modify re: Bills 53, 54, and 55.
Do Albertans still have avenues to protest Bills 53, 54, and 55 in Alberta?
(They only win if we give up!)
Wins this week -
By-elections - The NDP won two seats and the UCP won one. We are four seats away from Smith in a minority government situation.
We are closer to recalls in Calgary Bow, Nicolaides, and Calgary North West, Sawhaney - if you want to/can volunteer, please let us know at info@abresistance.ca. We need people in Bow and the North West. Even if you don’t live there, we have jobs you can do. If you want to recall your MLA, we can support anyone who wants to do a recall in their constituency. Our website has a recall package that will show you the steps to doing a recall. (Currently down, but when it is reactivated. If you are interested, send an email to abresistance2007@gmail.com, and we can get you the information.
