Alberta MLAs vs Teachers Time Off
People complain about teachers time off... What about MLA's?
The Legislature broke for summer on May 15, 2025, and will not return to session until October 27, 2025. Many people complain that teachers/school staff get time off in the summer. Teachers are contracted to work 10 months of the year. They get summer pay because they have that taken off their monthly checks to get paid out over 12 months. The average Alberta teacher gets paid between $80,000 and $104,000, depending on years of education and experience. MLAs get paid a base salary of $120,000. On top of that, they get an additional $60,000 if they are a Minister. As well, they have a housing allowance, an expense account, and both teachers and MLAs get a health spending account.
We can agree that MLAs make considerably more and have more benefits than teachers. Now, here is what teachers work in months - 10/12 and days are an average of 190 days teaching in front of children, as well as PD days and Teacher’s Convention, adding 10 more days to the calendar - so they work 200 days/year.
MLAs this year will sit in the Legislature for four months - 4/12. Their summer break is 136 days long, and they still have 78 days left of their summer. They can even expense their trip to the Calgary Stampede as being on business for the government. It is time to call out the Alberta Government on its double standards. They point fingers at the others, trying to divert your attention while they take apart health care and education. They try to sneak in coal mines in the Rockies, and they let oil companies pay the lowest taxes in Alberta while not cleaning up their oil wells or tailings ponds. They stop your access to COVID vaccines, steal money from those on AISH, and then slip in their $2 million Alberta Next Panel that is skewed to the separatist agenda.
Keep your eyes on what is happening so you can join millions of Albertans in resisting the UCP’s plans for our province. We are in this together, and this is the Summer of Resistance!

Steve, it shows up in black print on white here. Are you on your phone, and is it set on dark screen?
Teachers spend time doing homework and preparing for teaching. If you watch a session of the Alberta legislature ….it is obvious that many of the UCP MLAs do not do their homework!
